Como Preparar um Tech Pack para OEM de Móveis: O Que uma Fábrica Realmente Quer Receber

Dicas de OEM/ODM, guias de materiais e insights de mercado para compradores de móveis para animais de estimação e proprietários de marcas.

The worst drawing we ever built to was beautiful: a three-quarter render, warm oak tones, a cat mid-scratch on the top perch. No dimensions, no material callout, no hardware note. We estimated the post diameter from the cat in the picture — and the entire first round had to be redone. A tech pack is the document that would have stopped that.

How to Prepare a Tech Pack for Furniture OEM: Start With the File Package, Not the Design

How do you prepare a tech pack for furniture OEM? Assemble one PDF with seven sections — orthographic views, a dimension table, a BOM, material specs, a hardware list, packaging specs, and revision control — plus vector source files. Send that package first, and the factory engineers from day one.

Furniture OEM tech pack layout: orthographic views, dimension table, and BOM checklist for how to prepare tech pack furniture OEM

Orthographic Views: Three Flat Drawings That Replace a Thousand Messages

Orthographic views are flat, scale-accurate projections — front, side, and top at minimum — that show the geometry a render hides. A factory reads them to program cutting, confirm joinery, and check clearances. One rendered beauty shot cannot do this work; three flat drawings can.

Every view gets a scale note and a projection symbol (third-angle for most furniture work) — Wikipedia’s technical drawing overview documents the standards behind this. Hole positions get center marks with diameter callouts — a missing diameter stalls the drill program. Add one section view through the heaviest joint — a scratching-post base, a condo wall junction. Send the PDF for review and DWG or DXF for engineering.

The Dimension Table: Every Number the Factory Builds To

Drawings show shape; the dimension table carries the numbers that decide pass or fail. Each row names a component and lists length, width, thickness, plus a tolerance column — the column most files lack, and the one that matters most.

Mark every dimension nominal or critical. Nominal dims get a general shop tolerance: on solid wood, ±1 mm is honest, because wood moves with humidity. Critical dims get their own tight number: mounting-hole spacing, the slot a connector bolt must pass through, the assembled footprint. State them in metric. And never dimension to a render: if the drawing says 600 and the render looks like 620, the drawing wins.

BOM and Material Specs: What Exactly Gets Bought

A BOM lists every material and component with specifications — species, thickness, grade, quantity per unit. Material specs add the rules: moisture content, finish code, edge treatment. Without both, purchasing substitutes whatever looks close, and the product that ships is not the product you approved. Wikipedia’s BOM overview documents this manufacturing discipline.

Write it the way a buyer would order from it: item number, component, material, size, quantity per unit, source note. Example: post, pine, 90 mm diameter, four per unit; base panel, rubberwood, 18 mm, one per unit. The material specs page answers purchasing’s next questions: species stated honestly; moisture content 8 to 12 percent, kiln-dried — a post that arrives wet cracks around its hardware within a season; finish as a water-based code with your approved color-board number, never “natural oak” as a phrase, which is three colors from three mills. Edges sanded to 180 grit, eased, no sharp corners on cat-contact surfaces.

The Hardware List: Small Parts, Big Rework

Hardware is where the cheapest line item causes the most expensive delay. A full hardware list names every connector: diameter, length, thread standard, material, and quantity per unit plus a spare ratio for the assembly kit.

First, the tool interface: the Allen key size, and confirmation that each bolt head sits below the wood surface or ships with a cover cap — exposed heads on a scratching post are a warranty conversation waiting to happen. Second, the sourcing split: factory-supplied or buyer-supplied. When a buyer ships their own hardware, the list must carry its delivery date, because the assembly line cannot start without those parts. We have seen a bolt 5 mm too long punch through a platform face — a line the hardware list should have had.

Packaging Specs in Your Furniture OEM Tech Pack: The Section Most Buyers Skip

Packaging specs define the carton, the inserts, and the marks on the box — and they are the most skipped section in every tech pack we receive. Wood is heavy and tall trees are top-heavy; a single-wall carton that survives flat-pack shelving may not survive a floor-to-ceiling tree.

Give us the packaging type (flat-pack KD or assembled), board grade, inner carton dimensions, and the insert plan: foam corners, part separation, and a sealed hardware bag taped inside the box — never loose. Then the shipping marks: brand, model, the “1 of 4” count, handling icons, country of origin. For a retail-ready printed color box, add the dieline here; our private label branding guide covers the color-box tier, including the barcode panel.

Revision Control: How Your Tech Pack Survives Its Own Success

Every tech pack gets revised — a platform depth changes after the first sample. Revision control keeps version three from being built to version one. Without it, the floor holds three PDFs and guesses which is current.

Every page carries a revision letter and date in the title block; the pack opens with a change log — revision, date, what changed, why, approved by. Rev A is the first released version, and a letter only advances when the change log records it. Mid-run changes go through an engineering change note; the old PDF is marked superseded, never deleted: a warranty claim two years later may need to know exactly what Rev B authorized.

The Tech Pack Checklist: Seven Sections to Send Before We Start Engineering

Run this checklist before you send your file. If every box ticks, our engineers can start the same day.

  • [ ] Orthographic views — front, side, top minimum, scaled, projection symbol; DWG or DXF attached
  • [ ] Dimension table — every component, nominal vs. critical marked, tolerances stated, metric
  • [ ] BOM — itemized materials with species, thickness, quantity per unit
  • [ ] Material specs — moisture content, finish code with color-board number, edge treatment
  • [ ] Hardware list — every connector with diameter, length, thread, tool size, sourcing split
  • [ ] Packaging specs — carton type, board grade, inner dims, insert plan, shipping marks
  • [ ] Revision control — revision letter and date on every page, change log up front

A complete tech pack changes what the sampling stage can achieve: the first sample tests your design decisions, not our guesses. Our OEM process page shows where the tech pack sits in the full development flow.

FAQ

What is a tech pack for furniture OEM?
A tech pack — also called a technical dossier — is the manufacturing instruction set for your product: orthographic views, a dimension table, a BOM, material specs, a hardware list, packaging specs, and revision control.

Do I need CAD software to prepare a tech pack?
Not necessarily, but drawings must be scale-accurate with stated dimensions and tolerances. For anything with joinery, have a draftsperson produce proper orthographic views.

What file formats should I send with my tech pack?
One indexed PDF with all seven sections, plus vector sources (DWG or DXF) for the drawings. PDFs are for reading and approval; vector sources are what engineers measure and program from.

How detailed should the dimension table be?
Every component gets length, width, thickness, and a tolerance column. Mark dims nominal or critical — hole spacing and the assembled footprint get tight tolerances; general woodwork dims get an honest shop tolerance.

Can I update the tech pack after production starts?
Yes: advance the revision letter, log what changed and why, and mark the old version superseded. Mid-run changes go through an engineering change note so the floor never builds from two versions at once.

Should the tech pack include assembly instructions?
No — assembly instructions are a separate, consumer-facing document. But they are built from the tech pack: the hardware list becomes the parts list, the orthographic views become the diagrams. Write the consumer sheet after the tech pack is frozen.
